Well, we all made it back to Bermondsey by 11.15 pm last night after our first experiment at using the tube to take us to Epping Forest for a night hike. I’m not sure if the adventure through the woods and over streams was more of a challenge than the rush-hour tube journey to get there, but we all had great fun. The best bit for me was the arrival of an
already packed tube train and Stratford, we had tried to stagger the 3
patrols on subsequent trains but there were 2 groups of scouts and leaders struggling to get-on.
Myself, Joseph and Jack were the last and they commended me afterwards on my rugby
scrum skills as we launched ourselves at the wall of grim-faced commutors,
not one of them said a word, but if looks could kill! The doors kept opening
and closing on by rucsac but as we finally moved away one of the Joseph said,” Oh look, Jason is still on the platform!” I threw myself against the window & let out such a loud, “Oh XXXX” , people around smiled…. it
was a wind-up… but a good one!

I felt we didn’t really have enough time for a more relaxed walk, or to stop and eat, it was a real worry we were’nt all going to make it through the dark woods to Theydon Bois station by 10.15pm.
All the PLs did a great job at keeping their patrols safe and together, although they do need to take more time to read instructions more carefully!

Thanks to our leaders who ‘tracked’ each patrol from a distance, especially our 2 new leaders Rod and Lin, and to Pete and Catherine.
Lots of praise to the younger scouts and to our new member Tom for coping with a really hard walk, next time all remember to wear your boots!
Please remember to be at Manor at 6pm again next week to walk to City hall for the start of our ‘Bases Hike’ lots of fun and challenges, and not too much walking this time. Or meet us at City Hall ( on the grass at Potter’s Fields ) at 7pm. Back to Manor by 10pm ( no mini-bus home, sorry) uniform or red shirts and scarves.
You can cycle if you have lights on your bike, a helmet and a lock. Josh and I will probably cycle.
